The MHSC Masters Team regularly compete at meets around
the country, and even abroad. They have enjoyed considerable success in
recent times and these pages will bring you up to date information on their
events.

Muttley Swimmers lift Leicestershire in the National County Masters
Championships
There was a fair
sprinkling of Muttley Masters Squad swimmers in the Leicestershire Masters Team
for the National Inter County Masters Competition held at the Braunstone Pool.
Eight Midlands Counties were competing and the
Leicestershire Team came in a fantastic 2nd, behind several times
National Champions Warwickshire- Leics. being
the highest placed East Midlands
County.
During the Gala they set
3 East Midland Individual Records, plus 5 relay records.
Ruth Cheema (xx-xxyrs - age category withheld for
safety reasons...that's the safety of the editior!) won her breaststroke event
in fine style in a time of
37.34, also grabbing a 2nd place in the Butterfly. She
also featured in the record breaking Medley relay team 160yrs plus
alongside Clubmate Nic James.
Nicola also swam in the 240yrs plus Medley team
which broke the record and was 2nd in her Individual 35 plus
backstroke.
Robin Oldfield swam in 2 record breaking team
event- the 200yrs plus Medley and freestyle teams,with an Individual 2nd
place in the 55 plus backstroke.
Kevin James and Steve Barry were two
of the swimmers in the 100 plus Medley relay.
Natalie
Barratt earned runner up spot in the 18 plus freestyle.
Other Individual wins-which were hard to come by- went to
Chris Sansom,Mick Commons and Carl Shaw(Lough),Matt Smith(Leicester Neptune) and
Aneska Binks(Penguins).
The Team must now wait to see where they finished overall
when all the Counties from England have had their Results processed.

Masters master pool at Ponds Forge
The Harborough Masters Squad put on an excellent show at
the National Masters Short Course Championships in Sheffield on Saturday 27th
October.
In supreme form was Ruth Cheema in the 45/49 years
age group with a clean sweep for 3 Gold Medals in her breaststroke events. She
broke the Club Record which had stood for 14 years on the 100m event with a
lifetime best of 1.20.50.; then
went on to win the 200m race (3.5.68), and completed he hat trick with a best
time of 37.09 in the 50m event. Not
content with that she took silver in
the 4 x 1 Individual Medley in a best time(1.15.59),also grabbing a 5th
place in the 50m back(38.04)
Nicola James (35/39yrs) just missed out on a medal for
two hard fought 4th
places in the 100m backstroke(1.15.5) and 200m backstroke (2.44.23), she clocked
a best time for her 5th position in the 50m back(34.37).
Kevin James(25/29) won a well deserved silver in the
gruelling 1500m race in a time of 18.12.88, and Robin Oldfield
won bronze on his 50m backstroke in the 60/64yrs section.He was also 5th
on the 100m f/s in 1.12.22.
Steven Peterson in his first competition was pleased with
his 200m f/s 12th place in the 30/34yrs section(2.16.35.) and Steve
Barry also was placed 12th in the 40/44yrs 100m f/s with a time of
61.21.
The mixed relays squad(Ruth,Nicola,Steve and Stephen
Greaves) competing in the 160yrs plus section broke their existing East Midlands
Records when they were placed 6th in the Freestyle event
in a time of 1.56.73-a three
second improvement, and then just missed out on a medal in the Medley race
for 4th place in 2.8.92.another three second
improvement.(records subject to ratification)
Ruth Cheema has a hot summer, even if the rest of us didn't!
Ruth bagged two medals that the European Masters in
Slovenia. She achieved Silver in the 100M Breast in a time of 1:24.48,
being beaten only by the world record holder.
In the 50m Breast she won Bronze in a time of 39.35
In other events she clocked a time of 3:09.25, and 4th
place, in the 200m Breast, and 5th, with a time of 2:49.83, in the 200m IM -
which was also a new East Midlands record.
Ruth also struck gold, and lots of it, in the
Staffordshire Masters on Sunday 23rd. With no other members of the Muttley
Squad competing, Ruth had to maintain their reputation for grabbing medals, and
did so in fine style. Well done Ruth, and well done Sam Cheema for
pursuading Mum to do the 100m Fly!

Hat Trick for Ruth Cheema
Harborough Master Swimmer Ruth Cheema-competing at the
National Masters Long Course Event in
Manchester –achieved a superb hat trick of Gold Medals-
Swimming in the 45-49 yrs age group she won all 3
breaststroke events-and all in Personal Best times, this means she is ranked
Number one in Britain on all 3 events for her age group. She is now setting her
sights on the European Masters to be held in Kranj,Slovenia at the end of
August,where are aims are more medals.
Her wins were 50m breaststroke 37.89
100m Breaststroke 1.23.36 and 200m breaststroke 3.8.75.

Harborough Masters triumphed with a dazzling array
of medals at the 2007 Midland
Masters Championships at Leamington Spa.
The team of ten Masters swimmers brought home a haul of 22 individual
and 4 relay medals including 10 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze medals: their
best ever result in this fiercely fought three day competition.
For the men Robin Oldfield shone with gold in four
events in the 60 – 64 year age group, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 50m
backstroke and 100m individual medley.
He added silvers in the 100m and 200m backstroke events.
Stephen Greaves took silver in the 40 – 44 year
100m butterfly and Steve Peterson gained bronze in the 30 – 34 year 200m
freestyle in his first Masters competition.
In the women’s team Ruth Cheema won four golds in
the 45 – 49 year age group. These
came in the 200m individual medley, and a hat trick of gold in the three
breaststroke events of 50m, 100m and 200m.
In the 200m she set a new East Midland Masters record.
Ruth also came home with silver for the 400m freestyle and bronze in
50m butterfly and 100m individual medley.
Nic James grabbed a gold medal and a new East
Midland Masters record in the 35 – 39 age group for 200m backstroke.
She continued the meet in fine form with silver medals in the 50m
butterfly and 50m and 100m backstroke events and a bronze in the 200m
freestyle. Adele Greaves,
competing in the 40 – 44 year age group, took gold in the 50m freestyle
and silver in the 100m freestyle.
The mixed relay team of Stephen Greaves, Steve
Barry, Ruth Cheema and Nic James took bronze in both medley and freestyle
relays setting new East Midland records in the process.
The women’s team of Adele Greaves, Steph Harrison, Ruth Cheema and
Nic James did the same in both relay events, setting new East Midland
records along the way.

Six
of Market Harborough Swimming Club’s masters swimmers travelled to Milton
Keynes on Sunday 3rd December to compete in the City of Milton Keynes
Annual Masters Meet. Swimmers
compete in 5 year age groups, the youngest being 25 and the oldest competitor on
the day being 75 years of age.
Steve
Barry set the standard for the day with silver medals in the 200 medley (2.38.09
pb) and 50m fly (31.41 pb), he then followed these swims with bronze medals in
the 50m freestyle (28.07)and 50m backstroke (34.87 pb) and narrowly missed out
on bronze coming 4th in the 200m freestyle (2.19.75)
Stephen
Greaves continued the team’s medal collection with gold medals in the 50m fly
(29.53) , 50m freestyle (27.59) and in the gruelling 100m fly (1.05.79) then
gained a bronze in the 50m breastroke (36.49).
Wife Adele achieved 5th place in the 50m fly (38.14)and
followed this with a creditable bronze medal in the 50m freestyle (34.31).
Kevin
James, competing in the youngest age group just missed out on a medal in the
100m backstroke in a time of 1.10.27, but made amends later in the day by
claiming gold in the 200m freestyle (2.06.95) and a bronze in the 100m fly
(1.06.81).
Nic
James claimed 2 gold medals in the 50m backstroke (35.51) and 200m freestyle
(2.30.81) and also achieved a silver medal in the 100m backstroke (1.15.99),
narrowly missing out on the gold by less than half a second.
Ruth
Cheema set two personal best times on the day in the 50m fly (35.56) and 200m
freestyle (2.37.43) and took gold and bronze respectively.
Ruth also gained gold medals in the 50m & 100m breastroke, setting
new meet records in both.
The
day was made complete by two excellent relay golds for the mixed team of Stephen
Greaves, Ruth Cheema, Nicola James & Steve Barry in the 160+ age group, the
medley relay being a new meet record by 4 seconds.

ASA National Masters Championships 2006

Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield
This time of the year heralds the annual
National Masters Swimming Championships at Ponds Forge Sheffield. Market Harborough Swimming Club had a team of 7 swimmers at
this years championships competing in both individual events as well as
mixed and men’s relays. Masters
events are split into 5 year age bands starting at 25 years and rising to
whatever age accommodates the oldest swimmer at the event – at this
year’s meet the oldest competitor was 90.
Masters swimming, particularly at National Level, attracts both keen
Club swimmers and ex Olympic medal winners alike.
Market Harborough swimmers came back with three
medals; Ruth Cheema gained silver in the 100m Breaststroke and a bronze in the 50m Breaststroke both swims were completed in
new personal best (PB) times. Stephen
Greaves achieved bronze in the 100m Butterfly.
Kevin James came 4th in a gruelling 1500m Freestyle with
both Ruth Cheema and Richard Wood coming in 4th in the their
respective 200m breaststroke events with Ruth again putting in a personal
best time. The ladies 200m
Individual Medley saw Ruth gain another 4th place and yet again
with a PB. Robin Oldfield
achieved 5th in the 50m Backstroke, whilst Stephen Greaves and
Steve Barry gained 6th and 7th places respectively in
the 400m Freestyle and 9th and 12th in the 100m
Freestyle; both events produced personal best times for Steve Barry.
Ruth rounded off her individual swims with a 6th place in
the 100m Individual Medley. Nicola
James, after recently becoming a Mother, put in a strong performance in the
100m Backstroke to gain a creditable 6th place.
The
relay events saw a strong performance from MHSC with Steve Barry, Kevin
James, Richard Wood and Stephen Greaves achieving 5th and 9th
places in the Men’s 200m Medley and Freestyle relays respectively, with
the mixed team of Nicola James, Ruth Cheema, Stephen Greaves and Steve Barry
gaining 5th in the 200m Medley relay.

Master Swimmers strike gold in Wolverhampton
Well done to the Masters Swimmers in the recent
Staffordshire Open Masters event. The four swimmers who entered came back
with a hoard of well deserved medals, and Ruth Cheema was in particularly fine
form with 5 PBs! They've set a great example to the rest of the team
swimmers. The results were:
